Pilgrim India
The photographs in Pilgrim India were taken along the Ganges in Northern India between 1966 and 2012. Most were taken at well-known places of pilgrimage along the River – Haridwar, where the Ganges emerges from the Himalayas and enters the plains; Prayagraj (Allahabad) and Varanasi (Benares), located between New Delhi and Kolkata (Calcutta); and Sagar Island, south of Kolkata, where the Ganges finishes its course at the Bay of Bengal.
The color photographs show the principle source of the Ganges, at Gaumukh (Badrinath and Kedarnath are two other sources), a glacier some 17 kilometers above Gangotri at the base of the Himalayas. Pilgrims wishing to visit this auspicious glacier must make the journey on foot.
